Everyone experiences anxiety, to some degree, at some point in their lives. Others tolerate it on a weekly, if not daily, basis. I’ve struggled with crippling anxiety since graduation. It has become a huge part of my life and I’m still looking for holistic treatments to relieve my symptoms. Everyone is different, but I want to share what worked for me. I hope some of these tips will help you too! Remember, we’re in this together! 1 | Essential oils Two days before Eid al-Fitr, I unpacked a diffuser and a box of assorted essential oils. I was very skeptical when I first opened it and probably made one of the “Thanks so much but I’ll never use this” faces. However, after a few nights, I filled the diffuser with water and 8 drops of lavender essential oils and drifted into a deep sleep. I had one of the quietest sleeps in months. Today, I still use my diffuser 3-4 times a week and on particularly jittery nights I will add a few drops of lavender oil to my pillow for extra relaxation. Seriously, if you haven’t already – you have to try this amazing blend! 2 | clean eating If you regularly eat processed and fried foods – your gut will not be happy. An unhappy gut = an unhappy mind. Simple and clear. I noticed a significant reduction in my anxiety levels when practicing clean eating. While eating clean 24/7 is ideal, it’s not realistic. However, you can make small changes in your daily routine to improve your eating habits. Drinking more water, cutting out dairy in your morning coffee and cutting out soda are game-changers. Try to limit the amount of junk food you eat, and instead prepare more home-cooked meals. Your intuition (and your brain) will thank you later 3 | YOGA If you’re like me and prefer not to sweat in the gym, yoga is a great alternative. The effectiveness of yoga is often underestimated. Not only is it great for your body, it cleans your mind. If you’re new to yoga, try a beginner-level or restorative yoga course. Restorative yoga focuses on breathing and stretching techniques – which is basically like giving your body a big hug. You will feel rejuvenated afterwards and your anxiety levels will go away. Yoga comes after the prayer that we Muslims perform to worship God. 4 | Meditation I have recently benefited from the magic of meditation. Meditation is the art of relaxation. Meditation teaches you to clear your mind of all your worries and focus on your breath. I like to have soft music or background noise (I love thunderstorms!) while I exercise. If you are looking for the perfect meditation guide, YouTube has plenty of meditation audio clips that will leave you feeling refreshed. I usually stick to the meditation trails at the 10 minute mark – so I can clear my mind, but not exhaust myself to the point of falling asleep! 5 | Deep Muscle Massage If you are experiencing a greater than usual volume of anxiety, consider getting a deep tissue massage. When you suffer from anxiety for a long time, your muscles will contract, leaving your body in a state of tension. Deep tissue massage focuses on relieving stress and pain from chronic stress. I try to get a deep tissue massage every 1-2 months to “reset” my body. Many insurance companies will cover a portion of the massages, so be sure to check with your doctor! You can also invest in a spa membership to receive massages at a discount! 6 | Green Tea Ah, green tea. Drinking green tea not only gives you that “warm” feeling, but it is also loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that help restore the body. There is just something about relaxing from the day in bed with green tea. If your aching stomach is a side effect of anxiety, green tea helps soothe it. I have found that it helps relieve anxiety. At the very least, it’s great for your body!من السهل أن تشعر باليأس عندما يسيطر القلق على حياتك. يمكن أن يكون تتبع تقدمك طريقة سهلة للتعرف على التحسن! لقد اكتشفت مؤخرًا Spire Mindfulness + 7 | Track your health progress It’s easy to feel hopeless when anxiety is taking over your life. Tracking your progress can be an easy way to see improvement! I recently discovered Spire Mindfulness + Activity Tracker, which is basically an electronic diary of your mental (and physical) health. These activity trackers measure calories, track steps and even record breathing patterns! This device acts as your personal trainer as it tracks your routine, including periods of stress, calm and focus. Spire learns how to anticipate stressful events before they most likely happen and even alerts users with actionable insights on how to prepare and experience more peace in their lives! Amazing isn’t it?! This device is smaller than a lipstick tube and clips onto your clothes with care! 8 | Support system If you suffer from anxiety you are not alone. However, you may feel lonely. It is important to surround yourself with family and friends who understand your concern and can help raise your profile. It is more important than ever to build a strong support system that will support you when you are struggling with anxiety.
